HOWARD ARLIN BUCHANAN

Howard Arlin Buchanan, 83, passed away Monday, August 5, 2019 at his home in Lynn Haven, Florida. Howard was born June 19, 1936 in Fairfield, Alabama to Paul and Lorine Buchanan, the second of three children.
Howard served with distinction in the United States Army. His 18 years included two tours in Vietnam. Howard was highly decorated; commendations included being awarded multiple Bronze Star Medals and Air Medals, each with Valor Distinction. The majority of his service was with the 1st Calvary as a combat engineer. Howard completed his service as a Sergeant First Class. After leaving the service to take care of his children, Howard moved to Laguna Beach, Florida. Howard’s military service allowed him to travel around the world, but Howard always referred to Laguna Beach as his favorite place. He retired from the City of Panama City Beach, where he worked at the Russell-Fields Pier. Howard enjoyed tremendously the natural beach environment and working with the special group of friends that made up the pier staff.
Howard was a dedicated and loving father, who sacrificed much for his children. Through his example, they learned the value of perseverance and hard work. He treasured books and spent many hours reading (especially Westerns). He also enjoyed gardening. Howard spent endless hours in his garden creating beautiful spaces. Howard delighted in watching his granddaughter grow up. He instilled in Ella his love of reading, learning, and striving always for excellence. Above all; Howard worked quietly to help people in need and nurtured the success in those around him. Howard’s expectations were high, but unmatched by his ability to help others rise up.
His family and close friends rejoice knowing Howard has finished the race, fought the good fight, and kept the faith. He has been welcomed into Heaven by his Lord and Savior.
Howard is survived by his two children, son, Paul Buchanan and daughter, Jeanette Swigler ( husband Alan); granddaughter, Ella Swigler; brother, Jimmy Buchanan; sister, Pauline Glover; nephew, Timothy Glover (Tanya ); niece, Darlene Fancher (Bobby)and children Zack and Chase; sister-in-law, Ursula Styk; nephew, Andreas Stryk (Steffi); nephew Alex Stryk.
