JAMES HAROLD SMITH

James Harold Smith, 65, of Southport, passed away March 21, 2020. James was born in Jackson County, FL to Ruth Delores Coley and John Dewey Carlton. He was proudly retired from Local 942 Laborers Union, Fairbanks, Alaska and Shipworkers Union, Panama City, where worked as a plumber, longshoreman, and on the missle defense system in Alaska. James enjoyed fishing, ping pong, was an avid Treky (Star Trek). He also enjoyed watching Survivor and NASCAR on TV. Dale, Jr. was his guy. He loved to work in his yard and dance with all the women whenever possible. James was a good man, but could be stubborn as a mule. He was a hard worker, and was very proficient in his field of work. He loved his wife Christine with all his heart, and his Mama, brothers, sister, and his favorite brother in law, Billy.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Christine Smith; father, John Dewey Carlton, Sr.; mother, Ruth Delores Carlton; brother, John Dewey Carlton, Jr.; and his nephew, Buddy Gibbons, II.

Survivors include his brothers, Eddie Smith and wife Donna and Michael M. Carlton and wife Kelly, all of Panama City; sister and her husband, Sheila and Billy Cornelius of North Pole, Alaska; brother, Gordon Carlton and wife Melissa of Houston, TX; adopted brother,Jeff Scrutchfield and wife Donna of Panama City; aunts, Wanda Hetrick and Joann Munyon of Panama City; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and Bailey the Dog.

Due to the Corona Virus, we ask that all keep our social distance for the safety of others. A visitation will be held at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Wednesday, March 25, from 6-8 PM. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, March 26, at Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery, Kynesville, FL with Rev. Craig Brannon officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Emerald Coast Hospice.
