James William McLeod

Dr. James (Jim) William McLeod, former Ardmoreite, passed away in Panama City, Florida March 17, 2023, after a short illness.

Jim was born in Warr Acres, Oklahoma on July 9, 1947, but lived in Ardmore with his grandmother, Rudy Hendrix, attending the Central Church of Christ. After graduating from Ardmore High School in the Class of 1965, Jim attended the University of Oklahoma, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, and graduated from the University of Oklahoma Medical School in 1972. He completed his medical internship and orthopedic residency at the Portsmouth VA Naval Hospital.

As an officer in the US Navy, Jim was on the commissioning crew for the first US nuclear frigate, the USS California. He was also stationed at the Naval Air Station JAX, and attached to a battalion out of Cherry Point, NC. In 1980, he started the first orthopedic practice at Walter Reed Memorial Hospital in Gloucester, VA.

Jim loved practicing orthopedic medicine and surgery and had several private practices in major cities in Virginia. In 1988, he moved his family to Roanoke, VA, and continued to practice there until his retirement from the Veterans’ Administration hospital in 2015.

In retirement, Jim and Charlotte loved to travel, visiting their beloved Williamsburg as often as they could. Additionally, they cruised the Gulf of Mexico and traveled frequently to Oklahoma, Texas, and Florida visiting friends and relatives. Jim also served on the board of directors for the condo association where he lived in Roanoke. He will be remembered by his patients as an outstanding surgical diagnostician and by others as a devoted friend, father, and husband.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents Joseph W. McLeod and Lucille True McLeod, and his grandmother Rudy Hendrix. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Young formerly of Ardmore; his son Matthew and wife, Stacy; his son Geoffrey and wife, Ashley; grandchildren Kyle, Grayson, Caitlyn, Emma and Andrew.

A memorial service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church in Panama City Beach, FL on May 12th at 1:00 p.m.
