JANET CRIST

Janet Crist was born on January 19, 1935 and died peacefully on January 25, 2020 with her husband Gene and daughters Nanette and Suzanne by her side. Born in the tiny town of Burns, Kansas, Jan was the youngest of six children. Her closest sibling was 10 years older; the oldest was 25 years her senior. Always lively and headstrong, Jan took full advantage of being the “baby” of the family.
After high school, Jan moved to Wichita where she attended nursing school and worked as a nurse anesthetist. It was there she and Gene met on a blind date; they quickly fell in love and married. Gene’s work took their family to Overland Park, Kansas, where they had season tickets to the Kansas City Chiefs and invented happy hour (or so their daughters believed). Many friendships developed there continue to this day.

In 1971, the family moved to Panama City, where Jan continued her career at Bay Medical Center. The family settled in, making friends and building a home where they lived for 45 years. It was a place where people were always welcome, especially her daughters’ friends.
Jan had a special ability to touch the lives of everyone she met. She loved to talk but was an equally good listener. She was honest, yet loving. She was a caregiver to everyone in her orbit, be it her patients, her friends or – especially – her family. She had an abiding faith in God. She was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed, but never forgotten.

Jan is survived by Gene, her husband of 62 years, her daughters Nanette Crist and Suzanne Peterson, her son-in-law Tim Peterson, her grandchildren TJ, Drew and Elizabeth Peterson and her granddog Jakie.


A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 8, at Kent Forest Lawn. The service will be at 2:00 p.m., with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the American Cancer Society.
