John L. Whitfield, Sr., 93, of Panama City, passed away on Friday, August 4, 2017, peacefully in his sleep.

John was a graduate of Bellevue High School. He was a long-time resident and business man in West Nashville. During his working life, John was the owner and operator of an Esso Station on Charlotte Avenue, West Nashville Garage, and Service Manager of Geo, Busby Ford and Earl Dunn Pontiac. At the end of his career, he owned and operated John Whitfield Chevrolet in Cheatham County, Tennessee. John was a member and deacon at West Nashville Heights Church of Christ for many years. He was also a member of West Nashville Kiwanis and a Mason. Following the death of his loving wife, Margaret Louise Tillman Whitfield, John moved to Panama City where he resided for the past 25 years. John was a member of Jenks Avenue Church of Christ in Panama City and was instrumental in the formation of Emerald Beach Church of Christ.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Juanita A. Whitfield; three children, John L. Whitfield, Jr. (Kim), Lee Whitfield (Mary Margaret), Deborah Cundiff (Dan); two stepchildren, Don Swain (Linda) and Tommy Swain (Aurelita); five grandchildren, Johnny Whitfield, Jennifer Whitfield, Drew Whitfield, Jackson Whitfield, Bradly Cundiff; four step-grandchildren, Tina Vairo, Cody Swain, David Swain and Michelle Oliver; one great-grandchild and five step-great-grandchildren.

John believed a good name was more valuable than gold. He was well loved and will be missed by all.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 8, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., at Kent Forest Lawn chapel with Rev. Jack Reece officiating. The family will receive friends and visitors from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home just prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Jenks Avenue Church of Christ, Lads to Leaders Program or to Emerald Beach Church of Christ Lads to Leaders Program.
