Tribute

Karl M. Shelton, age 86, peacefully went to sleep on May 8, 2020 and
awakened with Jesus on May 9, 2020. Karl was born in Catawba County,
N.C. on June 8, 1933 and lived and attended school in Newton, N.C.
until June, 1952 when he entered the U.S. Army. Karl served three
years as a leader in the 47th Division Band at Fort Rucker, AL where
he met Deloris Hundley of Enterprise, AL.  After a brief courtship
and due to the abrupt closing of Ft. Rucker, they married in 1954.
Karl loved to say "we eloped with permission."  Karl and Deloris
moved to North Carolina where they lived for 17 years and had three
children: Melanie, Leslie and Kevin.
In his drive for success in his chosen field of investment banking,
Karl served as an executive at several national banks and vigorously
supported education in that field.  He was particularly appreciative
of his years of growth to vice president of North Carolina National
Bank from 1954-1971 and as senior vice president and treasurer at
Seattle First National Bank from 1971-1979.  Karl also worked at
Citizens Fidelity Corp. in Louisville, KY, Southeast Bank, N.A. in
Miami, FL and Security Federal Savings Bank in Columbia, S.C.
Having graduated from the American Institute of Banking early on in
N.C., Karl taught courses in the Banking School of the South at LSU
for several years as well as serving on their executive board.  He
was also a graduate of Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers
University.  He took special pride in his term as Vice President of
Bank Investments for the American Bankers Association.  He was a
devoted participant in sharing his knowledge and advising friends,
coworkers and family.
A treasured memory for the family will be the last 20 years of his
retirement spent managing his son's business office at Shelton
Service Center in Lynn Haven, Florida.
Karl is survived by his wife of 66 years, Deloris Shelton, his children Melanie Shelton,
Leslie Reilly (Mike), and Kevin Shelton (Suzanne), three granddaughters
and five great-grandchildren. Karl was predeceased by his mother and
stepfather Grace and Thurmond Harvell, his sister Sylvia McMillan (Alex), and is
survived by his brother Nink Harvell (Jane) and many extended family members in
North Carolina and Texas.
A memorial service for Karl will be held at a later date at Forest
