LESTER MAPLES
Lester started his career at age 14, driving a tow truck while the men of Oxford, Mississippi were off to war. By 15 he was rebuilding car engines.
In high school Lester met the love of his life, Janie. He earned a civil engineering degree from the University of Mississippi. Soon after, in the 60’s, he was the design engineer and project manager for the Deerpoint Lake Dam and the creation of the reservoir. To this day all of Bay County has Lester to thank for its drinking water.
Lester led a full life of service to God and to his fellow man, expressing the love of Jesus through his actions. With Janie by his side, Lester was generous with his time, talent, and resources: From serving as an active Gideon to leading congregational worship; from directing choir practice to teaching vacation bible school -- not to mention his homemade candy delivery and sugar-free recipes. His impact has been felt across generations.
Though stoic, Lester would never let a crowd of people take things too seriously. His outdated, yet mostly clean sense of humor has warmed many a heart. Each personally tailored joke grew in effectiveness upon repetition – when they were repeated – repeatedly. He will undoubtedly be extensively and endearingly quoted for years to come.
Lester and Janie have had a beautiful Happily Ever After, surrounded by a crowd of children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
The world is a better place for Lester having been in it.
We miss him already.
