Tribute

Mary Frances (White) Wittkopf died on October 12, 2020, at the age of 85. She was a beloved wife, mother, and Mimi. She was faithfully committed to serving her family and community. Born in Trafford, Alabama, Frances moved to Panama City, Florida as a young adult. There she met her future husband and love of her life, Richard. They were married at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church on October 7, 1961. They went on to travel as an Air Force serviceman and wife. In 1972, they relocated to Lynn Haven, Florida permanently. She faithfully served her community as branch librarian, department head, and library director in Lynn Haven for 22 years. She also served the city of Lynn Haven as a commissioner for 14 years, and was instrumental in bringing the Rails to Trails initiative to our community. In July 2019, a Trailhead dedication ceremony was held in her honor. She also moved on to become the branch librarian at the Springfield Library for an additional 20 years, retiring in 2018. Many Bay County residents attribute their love of reading to Mrs. Wittkopf, as she led them over the years from story time to college. Mrs. Wittkopf was very active in the community on a volunteer basis as well. She was a member of the Lynn Haven Garden Club, Bay County Storytellers Guild, Women’s League of Voters, Bay County Chamber of Commerce, Bay County Audubon Society, Lynn Haven Heritage Committee, Lynn Haven Rotary Club, Bay County Transportation Organization, Lynn Haven Centennial 2011 Committee, and the TUBBS Women’s Group. She was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Panama City since 1972. Mrs. Wittkopf is survived by her husband Richard; her sons Donald (Linda), and Michael (Kerry); her brother, John Carlton White; as well as six grandchildren: Taylor, Nickolos, Samuel, Austin, Matthew, Alexandra; and one great-grandchild, Ryder. She is also remembered fondly by several cousins and other family members. The family would like to thank Mimi’s personal caregivers-Whitney, Richelle, and Janine; as well as Emerald Coast Hospice for their wonderful care.
