Captain Robert Eugene Schmidt (Retired), 77, of Panama City, Florida, was granted his angel wings on September 28, 2023 surrounded by his family. Robert, known to everyone as “Schmitty” was born September 20, 1946 in Boulder Colorado.
Schmitty joined the United States Air Force in 1967 as a Medic, and proudly served his country for 22 years. In 1977, Schmitty earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Nebraska and then Commissioned as an Air Force Physician Assistant (PA) Officer in 1978. Following his retirement from active duty in 1989 from Tyndall Air Force Base he continued his career as a Physician Assistant in Panama City, Florida working in family medicine and at Southern Orthopedics until his retirement in 2005. Schmitty was a leader to his family and instilled values of generosity, giving back to the community and always welcoming everyone with open arms. He loved God and served in many capacities at Parker Global Methodist Church. Schmitty volunteered with the Walk to Emmaus Community, the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ), provided financial support to Samartians Purse Ministry and sponsored a child through World Vision since 1975. He was a member of the Christian Motorcycle Association (CMA) and loved watching his children and grandchildren play sports.
Robert Schmidt “Schmitty” is survived by his wife of 51 years, Kathy Schmidt of Panama City, FL; children, Tammy Turnmeyer (Tony Simler) of Lynn Haven FL, Damon (Alicia) Schmidt of Shreveport LA, Kelli (Lee) Space of Panama City, FL; brother, Richard (Lisa) Schmidt of Corpus Christi, TX; sisters, Sharon Schmidt of Corpus Christi, TX, Pamela Debusk (Jerry) of Aliso Viejo, CA; grandchildren and great grandchildren, Kurtis (Lauren) Schmidt, Matthew Packard, Carli Simler, Warren Packard, Marislynn Turnmeyer, Korbin (Selina) Schmidt, Gavin Space, Kullen Schmidt, Savannah Marler, Elijah Dane Schmidt and numerous nephews, nieces and close family friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Bobbetta Schmidt, his sister, Kristi Schmidt and his grandson, Dane Turnmeyer.
The Celebration of Life Service will be held at Parker Global Methodist Church, 908 S. Tyndall Parkway, Panama City, Florida 32404 on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at 11:00 am.
