Tribute

Lt Col Shirley M McMillin, USAF, Nurse Corp, ret., Passed from this life December 29, 2018 at Sims State Veterans’ Nursing Home. She was born in Erwin, Tennessee in 1936. She retired from the United States Air Force after twenty years of honorable service. Her service took her to Montana, Illinois, Turkey, Taiwan, England, and Florida. She was especially proud to have flown two years as an evacuation nurse on the C-9 Nightingale plane during her career. She received the Meritorious Service and Accommodation medals. Her final active duty assignment was Tyndall AFB. She met and married Charles McMillin shortly after being assigned to Tyndall AFB. In retirement, they enjoyed traveling and being active in numerous civic activities before his death in 1993. Shirley was a member of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, Antique Car Unit of Shaddai Temple, Society of Retired Air Force Nurses, Retired Officers Association, and as a volunteer worker for the American Cancer Society. Shirley actively served her church, First Methodist Church, by serving on several committees. She was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Fred and Aileen Sloman, husband, Charles McMillin. She is survived by sister, Mary Trachta, nephew Nathan Trachta (Mimi), all of Colorado Springs, Co and great nephew Ian Trachta (Katy), U.S. Navy, San Diego, CA and special life-long friend, Rose Smith, York, SC. The family extends special thanks to the caring staff of Sims State Veterans’ Nursing Home and Covenant Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donate to Covenant Hospice or the charity of choice. Friends will be received 10-11 am Wednesday at the Forest Park United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall where funeral services will take place at 11 am. Interment will be held privately at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
